No one would knowingly buy one of the roughly quarter million vehicles damaged last year at this time in New York and New Jersey by Hurricane Sandy. But
some people have undoubtedly  been duped and plenty of those cars are probably still out there looking for a naive, new owner.

Insurance companies typically total out vehicles that have been submerged in water, especially salt water. They then sell the cars for salvage. Salvage buyers might crush them or take good parts from them. Or they might clean them up, re-title and resell them.

The cars might look fine, but problems down the road are likely with these cars. While the vehicle  titles are supposed to be marked to indicate these vehicles were "salvaged," unscrupulous scoundrels sometimes find their way around such technicalities.

If you are contemplating a used car purchase, t
here are places you can check to ease your mind about getting stuck with  a flood damaged vehicle.. The National Insurance Crime Bureau, www.nicb.org is one such place and www.carfax.com/flood is another. Both are free and all you do is enter the car's 17 digit VIN (vehicle identification number).
