March 23rd marked the two-year anniversary of the passage of the Affordable Care Act.  According to a report released by The White House, health care reform has made significant contributions during the first two years.  Here are the areas of significant contribution and some of the examples sited for each area:


  • Insurance Company Accountability
    • elimination of pre-existing condition denial for children
    • elimination of lifetime dollar limits on health coverage
    • support of early retiree coverage through $5 billion in reinsurance payments to employers offering coverage to this group (Early Retiree Reinsurance Program -ERRP) 
  • Increased Access to Affordable Care
    • 2.5 million more adult children have health coverage through a parent's plan
    • 54 million more individuals receive no cost preventive services through their health insurance plans
    • over 50,000 individuals with pre-existing conditions gained coverage through the new pre-existing condition insurance plan 
  • Medicare Improvements
    • more than 5.1 million seniors and disabled individuals on Medicare saved over $3.1 billion on prescription drugs through a one-time rebate check, a 50% discount on brand-name drugs in the "donut hole", and free key preventive services and screenings
    • implementation of new technology and stronger penalties in the fight against fraud 
  • Higher Quality Care
    • initiatives aimed to cut red tape and create new opportunities and incentives to improve patient care 
  • Investing in Public Health
    • allocation of $1.25 million in funds to support community initiatives and the development of public health infrastructure focused on disease and illness prevention, research, and tracking
