As people prepare for winter vacations and Spring Break, insurance agents’ phones ring daily with people asking if they should purchase the high priced insurance car rental companies offer. For an extra fee that’s often up to $25 per day, the rental car company will forgive you if you bring their car back damaged. Otherwise, when you sign the rental car contract, you are agreeing to be responsible for  all or at least a big chunk of the damage.

Most people have fairly decent coverage for this situation under their regular auto insurance. Some credit card companies even include limited rental car coverage as a cardholder benefit. But we stop short of a categorical recommendation to reject the car rental company’s offer. There are some potential costly surprises you should know about and consider.

A one size fits all answer doesn’t work in the space available here. Our best advice is to make a phone call to your insurance agent. Your agent will ask where you are going and how long you will be renting the car. Both those elements contain potential traps. Your agent will know the details of your policy and can give you the advice you need to make a good decision.
